I would like to hasten to put the point out that this is all conjecture and Apple has not yet announced anything since the current iOS and an update that will be out in the next few weeks, the iPad 2, and the Verizon iPhone 4.
Apple patents always fascinate us, but this one in particular has us and a lot of people intrigued. Apple has patented what seems to be a next gen iPhone hybrid display. The hybrid display could switch between a standard LCD and an e-Paper display.
It could also divide itself into quadrants that could switch display types depending on the content you’re running. If you’ve ever tried reading on your iPhone in direct sunlight, you know this can be annoying.
The same thing goes for when reading a book on the iPad (in fact that’s one of the few things eBook readers have over the iPad). However with this new technology, things could change pretty quickly.
Even though the patent specifically applies to the iPhone, what with Amazon targeting the iPad with the screen’s glossiness and bad readability (on sunlight at least), it’s hard to imagine that Apple won’t do this with future iPads as well.
