AT&T announced on March 21, that it would buy out T-Mobile, USA.
If the deal goes through, AT&T said that it would be "rearranging how T-Mobile's cell towers work". The part of the electromagnetic spectrum that T-Mobile controls would be used for AT&T's 4G service. This would mean that current T-Mobile phones would not have access to the 3G service. The T-Mobile customers would need to replace their old phones with AT&T's phones. AT&T has not said whether or not they would provide those phones at a subsidised price. According to Ralph de la Vega, AT&T's head of wireless and consumer services, the whole process will take several years.
I would like to thank http://www.abc27.com/story/14289867/att-t-mobile-3g-phones-will-need-to-be-replaced for the information.
