If I had created a sensational headline such as “Verizon Delays Breathing... Rushed to Business Hospital” you might be likely to believe it by now. This article aims to sequence the high-profile delays of Verizon 4G devices up until today.
One of the first signs of trouble for Verizon Wireless’s 4G LTE network was when we saw the launch of their network... without any LTE enabled phones. This would be understandable if the time-frame for supporting only USB Modems could have been measured in weeks, but it was months before the first LTE 4G phone was launched... and even that was late!
We saw nearly five weeks of delay with the launch of the HTC Thunderbolt by “Big Red” from when the device was first expected. Then a month or so after that fiasco, the Samsung Droid Charge’s release was delayed indefinitely not even 24 hours before the officially announced release date. In-between these two events, the Motorola Bionic went completely missing.
With the HTC Thunderbolt still the only 4G phone on the Verizon LTE network, no word on when the Droid Charge will be coming (although, mid-May has been claimed), and now a delay on the Over-the-Air (OTA) update for the HTC Thunderbolt, one has to ask what exactly is Verizon up to... or not up to, rather?
One side effect of this fiasco that benefits consumers is the continual teasing of Verizon (this one too) phone prices by Amazon.com to keep sales of Verizon phones from stalling.
Every action taken by Verizon regarding its 4G LTE network and 4G phone launches indicates large scale failures or at least a complete failure between the abilities of the Verizon management and marketing teams to effectively communicate.
Verizon Wireless has been contacted repeatedly regarding these delays by myself and others, and no official statement acknowledging or addressing this string of delays has been made.
