T-Mobile USA announced the forthcoming availability of two new 4G phones at the GigaOM Mobilize conference on Monday.
Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer for the company, revealed that the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Amaze 4G soon will be available on T-Mobile's 4G network, which is based on HPSA+ 42 technology. He said users of the two smartphones could expect download speeds of 8 Mbps on average and 20 Mbps peak.
"Our research shows almost every U.S. consumer wants a smartphone," he said.
Both smartphones are scheduled to be available on October 12. A week ago, AT&T said it would offer the Samsung Galaxy S II on its network on October 2.
AT&T has proposed buying T-Mobile for $39 billion, but the deal is presently opposed by the U.S. Department of Justice on antitrust grounds. Brodman declined to detail new developments in proposed deal but expressed confidence that ultimately it will be approved.
Whether these two Android phones will be enough to revive T-Mobile's fortunes remains to be seen. A T-Mobile iPhone would certainly help. Apple is expected to announce its iPhone 5 early next month. Brodman acknowledged that his company would like to offer Apple's iPhone to its customers but neither confirmed nor denied a deal with Apple.
Brodman also introduced T-Mobile's Sonic 4G Mobile Hotspot, a device that allows up to five Wi-Fi-capable devices to connect to the Internet.
The HTC Amaze 4G features an 8-megapixel camera and 1080p HD video recorder, a dual LED flash, and one-touch photo sharing with Facebook, Flickr, and Picasa.
The phone runs Android 2.3.4 on a 1.5-GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 chip. It supports NFC for mobile payments.
The Samsung Galaxy S II relies on similar Qualcomm silicon running Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). It boasts the largest screen of any current T-Mobile smartphone, a 4.52-inch AMOLED Plus touch screen. The device includes an HDMI out port, which allows phone content to be played on compatible HDTVs.
The HTC Amaze 4G will cost $259.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate under T-Mobile's Classic voice and data plan. It will be offered on a two-year service contract.
