Review of iOS 5

I just, and I mean just, got iOS 5 on my iPod Touch 4th Gen.  Overall, it's the same UI as previous iOS versions. First, the positives:

  • texts for the iPod Touch.  iOS 5 brings text messaging to the iPod Touch.  The kind of shocked me at first because before, it was easier for Apple to push the iPhone, but now that I've thought about, it kind of makes sense.  We've got Android phones coming down in price for next to nothing on all of the carriers.
  • Notification Center.  The notification center has been nice on Android for the year that I've had my LG Ally.  The Notification Center on iOS 5 replicates the Android version quite well and even lets you customize the notifications and add in your own reminders and notifications-something I've been asking for from Android for a while (I have no clue if the customizations are in newer versions of Android.  I'm am still runing 2.2.2 and promised to be upgraded to 2.3 in February 2011 [obviously, I am still waiting for my promised update])
  • iCloud.  If you have used Google Docs or Amazon Cloud Storage, you'll kind of know what you're doing when setting up your iCloud account.
  • Over the Air Sync.  All though I haven't found out how to work it, the promise of it is enough to put in as a positive, but just barely.  UPDATE:  YOU HAVE TO SYNC WITH A COMPUTER BEFORE OVER THE AIR UPDATES WILL WORK AND THE COMPUTER MUST BE RUNNING (although, that's kind of obvious if you think about it).
And now, the negatives:
  • Long update process.  Just to download the new operating system, took me about 3 hours.  It then took me about 2 hours to update my iPod's software, and it has taken me over an hour to reload my apps and podcasts.
  • iMessage.  As I figured, there was going to be a downside.  iMessage, at least for the iPod touch, supports only iDevice to iDevice.
  • Home Button is Hard to Work.  My home button seems to be unresponsive at times.
  • No Camera Button in Lock Screen.  As of iOS 5.0, there is no camera button in the lock screen.
  • Over the Air Sync-It takes a quite a bit of work to see the OTA sync actually work.  To the average user, including me here, it appears as if the OTA sync doesn't work.
  • Apps Take A While To Bring Up For The First Time-The first time you launch an app, at least, the apps I have, take between 30 seconds and 5 minutes to pull up for the first time under iOS 5.  I haven't been able to find a reason for this, but it is quite annoying
  • Third Party Chords Don't 'Like' to Charge iPod-For some reason, my third party charging chord has stopped charging my iPod (running iOS 5) but continues to charge my sister's iPod (4th gen, iOS 4.3).
