Ainol, a Chinese company responsible for many of the MP4-based portable media players you've probably seen in budget shops is releasing NOVO7, the world's first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based tablet. But is it any good?
The NOVO7 is a seven-inch tablet that claims to be a full-fledged Android 4.0 ICS tablet. It isn't powered by any ARM processors and it doesn't have dual or quad-core processors. Instead, it operates with MIPS Technology's 1GHz XBurst CPU.
Amit Rohatgi, Mobile Principal Architect of the NOVO7 says MIPS is a "game changer for mobile because it's lowering the price barrier to widespread tablet ownership. Rohatgi also says the NOVO7 is a power-efficient (up to eight hours of battery life) tablet with 'excellent Open GL ES 2.0 graphics.'" Gameloft's Spider-man comes pre-loaded. We'll have to see about that.
Features include one USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3, micro SD slot, 1080p HD video playback, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, an unspecified front and two-megapixel rear cameras.
Storage-wise, we're looking at 4GB built-in, expandable by micro SD cards. It isn't much, but what can you honestly expect from a tablet that's only $100?
Eight and nine-inch models are reportedly coming out soon, but for now, the NOVO7 is a China-exclusive until it starts showing up under other brands from Leader International Inc. and OMG Electronics Ltd. around the globe.
Basically, this is a tablet you'll probably find at your local discount store or behind the registers at a pharmacy (yes, they sell tablets now, I checked!).
A tablet for $100 is dirt cheap and easily puts it as a great present for kids who need to be occupied on a road trip.
