Tonight, 8 April 2011, Verizon has announced that it is dropping the 1 year contracts.
Verizon Wireless has confirmed with us that it will eliminate one-year contracts starting April 17. Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney said that most customers sign up for two-year contracts anyway to take advantage of the lower promotional price. She said customers will still have the option of month to month and prepaid if they don't want to opt for the two-year contract. Existing customers with one-year contracts will not be affected.

What does this mean? Well if you have one-year contracts already, this is going to have no effect. If you have a two-year contract, month to month, or prepaid plans, starting 17 April, you will no longer be able to get one-year contracts. As of right now, this looks to be as far as the changes go, but I haven't seen any reasons why Verizon is making these changes, so I am slightly worried.
