We’ve been bringing you news on the LG G2x since we first heard of it and because this latest handset has both a dual-core processor and 4G capabilities it could very well be a good alternative for those who wanted the Motorola Droid Bionic on Verizon.
Now the LG G2x has actually been released we thought it was time to roundup some of the reviews to let you know what the experts think.
As a recap we’ll remind you of the G2x’s 4-inch WVGA touchscreen, dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip and 8-megapixel rear camera along with a 1.3-megapixel front facer. Also of course there’s 4G HSPA+ connectivity for the T-Mobile network and it’s priced at $199.99 on a two-year contract. The LG G2x (known as the Optimus 2X in other regions), runs on Android 2.2, which will no doubt be upgraded, to Android 2.3 Gingerbread pretty soon.
The first review of this phone that we looked at was over on Laptop by Brian Oliver Bennett who gave the phone a hugely comprehensive run through. A rating of 4 out of 5 stars was given with pros listed as high performance level, impressive camera and fast speeds, good gaming and design, while the only cons noted were the lack of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and a relatively poor battery life. All in all though the G2x was found to be a notable handset and described as “blazingly fast” and “pure Android goodness.”
Another detailed review can be found on Cnet by Nicole Lee where it also received a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Again, plus points included the performance from the dual-core processor, good design, HSPA+ speeds and this time also multimedia features. Strangely though in this review the camera was found to be a negative point and it was also noted that call quality could be better. Ultimately though the bottom line was that it would be hard to find a better Android phone on T-Mobile than the LG G2x.
Moving on to a review on Mobile Crunch by Dave Coldewey, where this time the plus points included speed once again, a good camera and gaming performance and a negative was seen as poor 4G speeds, a real departure from the first two reviews we looked at. In conclusion Coldewey described the G2x as “perhaps the most powerful phone on the market” and “certainly impressive technically,” but felt the design was lacking and also noted the absence of Gingerbread.
The last review we looked at was by Vincent Nguyen over on Slash Gear. Nguyen says that the G2x is certainly the best Android that T-Mobile currently has to offer and points to the decent camera and good design, although the “star of the show” accolade goes to that dual-core processor. The lack of Android 2.3 Gingerbread is also noted but as we’ve pointed out, this shouldn’t be a big drawback as we reckon it will be available pretty shortly for the G2x. Nguyen sees the only fly in the ointment being that the HTC Sensation 4G is also coming to T-Mobile later this year, which will have an even faster processor. However we have to agree that if you want a new Android smartphone now, you would do very well to purchase the T-Mobile G2x.
